Buying a car does not come cheap so a car loan can prove essential. Is a bad credit auto loan a sensible idea for those who have missed or made late payments?

Buying a car is an expensive exercise. Those who have missed or made late payments on personal debt may not believe that they are able to borrow money, but this isn't the case. A bad credit auto loan provides a consumer with the opportunity to purchase a vehicle with affordable monthly repayments.

Advantages of Bad Credit Auto Loans

  • Get to work. Buying a car involves a large financial outlay and most consumers don't have sufficient savings to facilitate this purchase. A bad credit auto loan could help someone purchase a vehicle and get to work.
  • Purchase a better car. It is possible to borrow money and combine this with personal savings in order to purchase a superior vehicle. Investing more at an early stage could mean fewer repairs are required further down-the-line.
  • Add-ons. When the company selling the vehicle also offer the bad credit auto loan, it is common to offer a few extra add-ons, such as free car insurance.
  • Variety and choice. Despite missed or late payments, consumers who wish to borrow money will have a range of car loans available to them.
  • Saves time. It could take years to save enough money to buy a car. A bad credit auto loan allows someone to make that purchase straight away.
  • Improve credit. Making a succession of punctual monthly repayments will improve a FICO score.

Disadvantages of Bad Credit Auto Loans

  • Interest payments. Following missed or late payments, the cost of borrowing money will rise dramatically in order to reflect the risk of default that is posed to the lender. This means that interest payments on a car loan will be far higher than on a conventional car loan.
  • Household bills. Buying a car on credit creates an additional monthly repayment. This leaves less money available to pay other essential household bills.
  • Personal debt. A bad credit auto loan is a further source of personal debt. The higher a consumer's debt-to-income ration, the greater the possibility of a borrower defaulting.
  • Spending too much. Access to credit can lead to a consumer spending too much money. Whilst spending a little extra can be beneficial, over-spending in order to get a more flashy model isn't.
  • Filing for bankruptcy not an option. Unlike a credit card balance or other sources of unsecured debt, a car loan cannot be written-off by filing for bankruptcy.

A bad credit auto loan is available to consumers who have missed or made late payments. Buying a car is the second most expensive purchase most people will ever make and this may not be possible without a car loan. It is essential that affordability is established prior to purchasing a vehicle as excessive personal debt could lead to financial difficulties.
